What is this expanded Medicaid?
This is coverage through Medicaid Managed Care plans. It covers your health care needs. It covers more than health emergencies. Benefits include routine doctor visits, recommended screenings, lab tests, and more. It also covers medicine and supplies. Medicaid Rx helps you pay at the pharmacy.
Under this new policy, current Emergency Medicaid recipients will be automatically transitioned to the new insurance and receive detailed instructions to choose a Medicaid Managed Care plan. New Yorkers who may qualify but are not yet enrolled in Emergency Medicaid will sign up through the Human Resources Administration.
To learn more, contact GetCoveredNYC: call 311 and ask for "GetCoveredNYC."
You must live in New York. You must be 65 years old or older. You can have:
- An income at or below $20,121 for one person, or an income at or below $27,214 for a household of two
- Resources at or below $30,182 for one person, or resources at or below $40,821 for a household of two
What if I already have Emergency Medicaid?
If you already have Emergency Medicaid, you will automatically get Expanded Medicaid:
- NY State of Health will send you a letter. It will tell you to choose a Medicaid Managed Care Plan. Please do this by the date in the letter. After you choose a plan, you will get a letter with the start date for your new insurance. You cannot apply for this coverage directly through NY State of Health.
For help with enrollment, contact GetCoveredNYC or visit a NYC Health Department Site – see answer under "How can I get help?"
If you have Emergency Medicaid and you qualify for Medicaid under this new expansion, you will automatically be enrolled in regular Medicaid. However, you can opt out. Consumers can choose not to take the new insurance by calling NY State of Health at 855-355-5777 and requesting Emergency Medicaid only. For help with this, contact GetCoveredNYC: call 311 and ask for "GetCoveredNYC."
I still don't qualify for Medicaid, how can I access health care?
If you don't qualify for Medicaid, there are other options in NYC!
- NYC Care is a health care access program that guarantees low-cost and no-cost services to New Yorkers who do not qualify for or cannot afford health insurance.
- Contact GetCoveredNYC for help finding health care that works for you.
