MOME Attends 32nd Annual Gotham Awards

On November 28, Commissioner Anne del Castillo and Deputy Commissioner for the Film Office at MOME Kwame Amoaku celebrated NYC’s independent film community by attending the 32nd Annual Gotham Awards. The world-renown awards show shines a light on NYC’s role as a premiere center for independent film production. According to MOME’s Film and Television Industry Economic Impact report, approximately 85% of filmmaking in NYC is independent. 
On November 2, MOME Commissioner Anne del Castillo attended the 12th annual Queens World Film Festival, held at the Queens Theatre and supported by MOME. The evening honored Ellen Kodadek, Sade Lythcott, Taryn Sacramone and Lucy Sexton for their leadership and tireless work to share resources and establish virtual spaces for cultural institutions and creatives to gather pre-, during and post-pandemic.

MOME Conducts First-Ever Economic Analysis of NYC’s Publishing Industry

On December 1, MOME released the results and recommendations from the 2022 NYC Publishing Industry Economic Impact Study, which found that the sector contributed $34 billion in economic activity and supported 95,000 jobs in 2020. The study’s top recommendations include the promotion of independent bookstores, which MOME is currently doing via its Support Local Bookstores campaign as well as making connections between NYC’s publishing businesses, artists, and smaller literary organizations. JanArtsNYC, the world’s most comprehensive platform for celebrating and experiencing the newest work in theater, dance, opera, music and performance, kicks off on January 4. For more information about the 2023 JanArtsNYC lineup, please visit their website.  
“A New York Evening with…” series featured Stromae at National Sawdust in Brooklyn on November 17 and S.G. Goodman at the Rubin Museum of Art on December 7. Nick Cucci, executive director of the New York Chapter of the Recording Academy, introduced the programs. The series is part of the GRAMMY Museum’s program partnership with MOME to bring a slate of the GRAMMY Museum’s renowned education and Public Programs to New York City. On November 16, the world-famous Radio City Rockettes took to the stage at the Hard Rock Hotel NY in Times Square to help kick off NYC Winter Outing, NYC & Company’s tourism initiative, supported in part by MOME, providing special offers during NYC Restaurant Week, NYC Broadway Week and NYC Must-See Week. On November 15, MOME Commissioner del Castillo joined Mayor Adams, NYS Senator Brad Hoylman, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, NYC Council Member Erik Bottcher, and NYC & Company President Fred Dixon to officially open NYC’s Museum of Broadway. This interactive journey along the Great White Way allows New Yorkers and tourists to experience the magic of Broadway -- from its storied past to its promising future. On November 14, MOME Commissioner del Castillo attended the 21st Annual Hispanic Organization of Latin Actor (HOLA) Awards, celebrating Latin achievements in theatre, TV and film and the legendary Chita Rivera who received a Lifetime Achievement Award. On November 5, MOME Commissioner del Castillo and Associate Commissioner of Education and Workforce Development Alia Jones-Harvey attended the 6th Annual PlayNYC Expo, the city’s premier gaming convention. The event, supported by MOME, celebrated NYC’s game development and ‘Made in NY’ indie game developers.

NYC Public School Film Festival Kicks Off 5th Year
Applications are now open for the 5th Annual New York City Public School Film Festival. The NYC Public School Film Festival, which honors the diversity of student voices, is presented by MOME and the NYC Department of Education (DOE). Applications can be submitted through March 7, 2023 on MOME’s website here
On November 15, Deputy Commissioner for the Film Office at MOME Kwame Amoaku participated in A Creators Conversation: Making TV in NYC panel discussion. The panel was part of the ‘Made in NY Talks’ series, presented in partnership with the Center for Communication. MOME Presents Inside Power Station @BerkleeNYC Series on NYC Life
Inside Power Station @BerkleeNYC is now airing Fridays at 9pm on NYC Media’s flagship television channel, NYC Life. The 12-episode series, which premiered on November 25, takes viewers inside the legendary NYC Power Station recording studio where Bruce Springsteen, Lady Gaga, the cast of Hamilton and many more have all recorded iconic albums. Hosted by the Executive Director of BerkleeNYC, Stephen Webber, the series showcases a variety of musicians, songwriters and producers who have created music magic at the Power Station, while also spotlighting new and upcoming performers hoping to follow in their footsteps. OFFICE OF NIGHTLIFE
The Office of Nightlife’s NITE SCHOOL continues with NARCAN Behind Every Bar: Overdose Prevention and Nalaxone Training on December 13 and January 12. NITE School is a series of monthly classes to educate the nightlife industry on safety and harm reduction prevention and response training. On Thursday, November 10, Executive Director Ariel Palitz spoke on a panel at the Nighttime Economy Micro Summit of Scotland, presented by the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA).
