On August 24, MOME proudly announced the return of and schedule for the ‘Broadway in the Boros’ series, back after a two-year hiatus. The series features live performances in New York City neighborhoods outside Manhattan by cast members and musicians of current Broadway musicals. Back for a fifth run, the shows are free, live, family-friendly, open to the public and feature wheelchair and American Sign Language accommodations.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said: “After two long years, I am thrilled to see our city continue its reopening with the return of ‘Broadway in the Boros.’ This remarkable series works to ensure that everyone in our city, regardless of their zip code, gets the chance to experience the magic of Broadway right in their backyards. Broadway is a lifeblood of our city, and this series is an incredible way for all New Yorkers to come out and relish in the magic that makes New York City’s heartbeat.”

On August 30, the GRAMMY Museum presented “A New York Evening with Gavin DeGraw,” sponsored by MOME. The event featured an intimate conversation and performance with the award-nominated, multi-platinum singer and songwriter. The conversation was moderated by the GRAMMY Museum’s Chief Curator & Vice President of Curatorial Affairs, Jasen Emmons, and included a discussion about Gavin’s astounding career, including his new album Face the River.

Gavin DeGraw is one of many artists to be featured in the GRAMMY Museum’s brand-new New York City program series titled “A New York Evening With…”, which includes bringing a slate of the GRAMMY Museum’s renowned education and Public Programs to the East Coast in partnership with MOME. On August 16, Mayor Adams joined Caroline’s on Broadway founder Caroline Hirsch, NYC & Company President Fred Dixon and Hard Rock Hotel Managing Director Karon Kopano to announce the details of the 18th annual New York Comedy Festival, running November 7-13 and featuring over 200 comedians, including Tracy Morgan, Conan O’Brien, Wanda Sykes and more. 

The event featured the presentation of a proclamation given by Mayor Adams to Caroline Hirsch in recognition of her eponymous venue’s role in making NYC the entertainment capital of the world since Caroline’s opening in 1992, and in helping to bring tourism back to NYC, post-pandemic.

From August 5 to 7, MOME partnered with Governor’s Island Arts in support of the inaugural House Fest, a three-day dance and performance event, bringing together more than 15 cultural and educational organizations currently in residence on Governor’s Island. Central to the weekend’s festivities was Dance Party NYC, a citywide dance party that took place on the same night across 80 locations throughout the five boroughs – including Nolan Park on Governors Island. Festival goers danced their hearts out alongside their fellow New Yorkers, with soundtracks pro-vided by Brooklyn United Marching Band, Brass Queens, DJ Aguapanela Mami, and DJ Yung Mayne. Dance Party NYC on Governors Island is presented by Governors Island Arts in collabo-ration with Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.

The event preceded the announcement of the Governors Island Arts’ Organizations in Residence Fall public programs, which can be found on their website.

On August 21, in partnership with Oye Group NYC and MOME, The Bushwick Starr presented the Summer Arts Festival in Maria Hernandez Park, a free annual event featuring activities, food, giveaways, and performances for all ages. The 2022 Summer Arts Festival theme was Celebration, curated by Modesto Flako Jimenez’s Oye Group, a Bushwick collective of both native and immigrant artists making new work in theater, dance, poetry, and film on immigration, gentrification, economics, and urban survival.

On August 22, Mayor Adams and Department of Small Business Services (SBS) Commissioner Kevin D. Kim announced the launch of Cannabis NYC, a first-of-its-kind initiative and suite of services to support the equitable growth of the cannabis industry in New York City — a key pillar of Mayor Adams’ Blueprint for NYC’s Economic Recovery. Housed at SBS, Cannabis NYC will support cannabis entrepreneurs and their workers as the industry develops. The initiative will work with industry stakeholders to create good jobs, successful small businesses, and sustainable economic opportunities, while also addressing the harms of cannabis prohibition. Cannabis NYC services will also include the City’s first-ever technical assistance for cannabis license applicants, as well as other business services to take entrepreneurs beyond licensing to a thriving operation. 

Office of Nightlife’s Ariel Palitz said this: “The introduction of legal cannabis sales and consumption in New York brings in a new era of fairness and equity with welcomed economic and social opportunity for all.”

From September 6 to 25, Broadway Week returns in NYC, offering audiences 2-for-1 tickets for 21 participating Broadway shows. This marks the 11th year of the program, back for the first time since 2019. Ticket information is available at nycgo.com/broadway-week.  

On September 7 at Orchard Beach in the Bronx and September 19 at Times Square in Manhattan, New Yorkers can enjoy the last two installments of the Rise Up NYC! Concert Series. The concert series seeks to encourage New Yorkers to explore all new neighborhoods and reconnect with one another as the city emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic.

On September 10 at the Abrons Arts Center Playhouse in NYC, the Wavy Awards, supported by MOME, will present its second annual awards show, amplifying the voices of historically-marginalized and often excluded talent such as women, LGBTQ+, BIPOC, non-binary, and artists who identify as having disabilities. Last year, the show garnered nearly 11k views via livestream and was featured in Variety for prioritizing inclusivity and accessibility. From September 12 to 18, the New York Latino Film Festival returns to NYC, supported by MOME, with an impressive roster of 105 films from nearly 10 countries. The opening night premiere will feature HBO’s celebrated docuseries ‘Habla Loud.’ The festival kicks off Latino Heritage Month with a return to the in-house cinematic experience at Regal Union Square, with numerous premieres, a free outdoor event, and more. From September 14 to October 2, NYC will welcome Little Amal, a 12-foot-tall puppet of a Syrian refugee girl, as she embarks on a journey through all five boroughs to bring awareness for the millions of refugees and marginalized people roaming the world in search of safety. From September 15 to October 3, MOME is proud to support the Brooklyn Book Festival, New York City’s largest free literary festival that connects readers with local, national and international authors and publishers during the course of a celebratory literary week. At this year’s festival, MOME is proud to partner with PEN America to present a special panel featuring DREAMing Out Loud, a writing workshop program that supports undocumented students. On September 17 at 8pm, NYC Media, a Division of the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, will premiere the new season of 92Y on its flagship channel, NYC Life. Season 13 will feature 10 episodes of the world-renowned “92Y Talks,” featuring many stars of televisions series that are ‘Made in NY,’ including The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, FBI, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Late Night with Seth Meyers. Stars from Broadway include Patti Lupone and Katrina Lenk discuss the revival of Company on Broadway. Actress Kristin Stewart and filmmaker Greta Gerwig give a behind-the-scenes look at the making of their latest films, Spencer and Little Women. “92Y Talks” has been airing on NYC Media and its flagship channel NYC Life for the last decade. From September 29 to October 2, MOME is proud to support PaleyWKND, a family-friendly festival featuring media, sports, gaming and entertainment that celebrates NYC’s status as the media capital of the world. From September 30 to October 2, the Curtain Up Broadway Festival will bring Broadway to the streets of New York City in Times Square on Broadway stretching between 45th and 48th Streets. Over fifteen unique events will take place on stages in Duffy Square (7th Ave. & 46th St.) and on Broadway between 45th and 48th Streets. Presented by Playbill, The Broadway League and the Times Square Alliance, all interactive events and performances at the three-day festival, supported by MOME, are live, free and open to the public. From September 30 to October 15, NYC will host the 60th New York Film Festival, presented by Film at Lincoln Center and supported by MOME. An annual bellwether of the state of cinema that has shaped film culture since 1963, the festival continues an enduring tradition of introducing audiences to bold and remarkable works from celebrated filmmakers as well as fresh new talent. Highlights of the festival include She Said, a drama about The New York Times reporters who broke the news about Harvey Weinstein’s misconduct against women, and Till, the story of Mamie Till Mobley’s grief over the 1955 lynching of her son.
