Location Change: NYC DOT to Hold New Round of Public Workshops for Brooklyn Queens Expressway Central Beginning June 20
NEW YORK – New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez today announced the city will present a project update for the city-owned section of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway between Atlantic Avenue and Sands Street, known as BQE Central, at public workshops on Thursday, June 20 (in-person) and Monday, June 24 (virtual).
"These workshops are another important step forward in undoing the historic harm the BQE has created across communities," said NYC DOT Commissioner Rodriguez. "Throughout this process, we have taken a responsive approach, listening closely to community feedback, and continuing to develop a vision for this critical infrastructure. As we prepare for environmental review, we will continue refining design concepts."

In September 2022, NYC DOT launched an extensive community engagement process through the BQE Corridor Vision. Through this process, Mayor Adams’ joint goals are to fix the city-owned structure of the BQE and to reconnect communities in the state-owned sections of the highway, known as BQE North — from the Kosciuszko Bridge to Sands Street — and BQE South — from Atlantic Avenue to the Verrazzano Bridge. To fund the next phase of planning work for BQE North and South, the city and state won a $5.6 million federal Reconnecting Communities grant. The agency is also working with its BQE Community partners – 18 community organizations across Brooklyn – to conduct outreach in communities along the corridor.
