HHC's integrated network of hospitals, primary care centers, nursing homes and a home health agency have received numerous distinguished awards for transforming the delivery of healthcare services and its commitment to safety, quality and innovation. HHC staff have also been recognized for their individual leadership and contributions to improving healthcare to all New Yorkers.
HHC Hospitals Ranked Among New York's Best
by U.S. News & World Report
HHC's Jacobi Medical Center, Harlem Hospital Center and Bellevue Hospital Center are all listed in the top regional rankings and top New York State rankings in the 2014 U.S. News & World Report list of the nation's top hospitals. All three ranked #29 overall out of almost 250 hospitals in New York State, and #40 overall out of 180 hospitals in the New York metropolitan area, which includes Long Island, Westchester and northern New Jersey. Jacobi, Harlem and Bellevue were also recognized as "High Performing" in the field of nephrology, indicating they scored in the top 25 percent of all the hospitals and medical centers U.S. News analyzed nationally in that specialty.
Healthgrades Awards Three HHC Hospitals
Coney Island Hospital and Woodhull Medical Center in Brooklyn, Queens Hospital Center in Queens earned top performing hospital awards for women’s health services from Healthgrades, a national organization that helps healthcare consumers evaluate and compare hospital performance.
Nobel Prize of City Government
The Fund for the City of New York has honored numerous HHC employees with the Sloan Public Service Award:

Modern Healthcare magazine in 2014 selected HHC President Dr. Ram Raju among the "50 Most Influential Physician Executives and Leaders" and "Top 25 Minority Executives in Healthcare." Dr. Raju was also on both lists in 2013.
HHC Primary Care Practices Recertified as Level 3 Patient-Centered Medical Homes
Continuing HHC's commitment to the highest level of primary care, the primary care practices in all locations have achieved the highest accreditation possible, from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).

Yvette Calderon, MD, MS has been recognized by the New York State Department of Health with the Laubenstein Award for leading HHC’s efforts to combat HIV/AIDS through innovative programs that engage underserved communities and at-risk populations.
Jacobi and Harlem Hospitals Ranked Among the Best Hospitals in New York City and State
HHC hospitals made the top regional rankings in the 2013 Best Hospitals rankings by U.S. News & World Report and were listed among the top 50 of 720 hospitals that are high-performing in one or more categories.
Elmhurst Hospital Center Best in Queens and One of the Safest Hospitals in New York State for Cardiac Interventions
The HHC hospital leads all Queens hospitals with the best overall safety rating, according to the latest report by the New York State Department of Health for angioplasty.
U.S. News & World Report Gives Highest Rating to two City Public Nursing Homes in its 2013 “Best Nursing Homes” List
The Sea View Hospital Rehabilitation Center Coler Specialty Hospital both received a five star rating and Dr. Susan Smith McKinney Nursing Center received four stars.
Reducing Infections Wins IPRO Quality Award
HHC received the award in recognition of our organization-wide commitment to quality improvement and specifically for our reduction since 2011 of healthcare associated infections. IPRO's awards are presented annually to New York State healthcare providers that have achieved significant quality-focused goals.
Eisenberg Award for Patient Safety and Quality
The National Quality Forum and The Joint Commission recognized HHC with the John M. Eisenberg Award for HHC In Focus, its special web site where the public can review how HHC facilities compare to state and national benchmarks on important quality and performance indicators. The award recognizes HHC's work to make quality and safety data transparent and its commitment to system-wide performance improvement.
Palliative Care Wins Circle of Life Award
HHC's system-wide palliative care program was awarded a Circle of Life Citation of Honor, the first time that such an honor was bestowed on a public hospital system. HHC's program was judged to be among the top eight of more than 100 national competitors.
IT Leader
HHC President Alan Aviles received the coveted CEO IT Achievement Award from the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society and Modern Healthcare Magazine for leadership in the use of information technology to advance healthcare excellence.
HHC Doctors Hailed Among New York's "Best"
New York magazine, in its annual list of the Best Doctors in the City, each year hails HHC physicians throughout the public hospital system as outstanding in their field.
Two HHC facilities were honored with prizes in the American Hospital Association-McKesson Quest for Quality Competition
- Queens Hospital Center receive a Citation of Merit recognizing its exceptionally effective approach to reducing disparities in care through its strong ties to the community, and its high level of community accountability.
- Lincoln Medical Center received a Quest for Quality award for its leadership and innovation in quality improvement and safety.
Top Awards for Patient Safety and Community Health
HHC's North Bronx Health Network, which includes Jacobi Medical Center and North Central Bronx Hospital, received the HANYS (Healthcare Association of New York State) Pinnacle Award for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety for the outstanding success of its Violence Reduction Protocol in psychiatric services. HANYS also awarded Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center the Honorable Mention for a Community Health Improvement Award for their Artist Access Program.
First to be Designated "Baby-Friendly"
Harlem Hospital Center is the first hospital in New York City to receive the coveted "Baby Friendly" certification granted by Baby-Friendly USA, part of a global initiative sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). The Initiative selects hospitals and birthing centers that successfully implement the recommended 10 steps of a comprehensive breastfeeding program.

Sea View Hospital Rehabilitation Center & Home earned the 2007 Ernest Amory Codman Award from The Joint Commission for excellence in the use of outcomes measurement to achieve improvements in the quality and safety of health care.
