Black Lives Count

Black Lives Matter is more than a hashtag. It's a call to not only recognize systemic injustices but also to work to dismantle them. The 2020 Census is part of that critical work. Why? Because the census is about money, power, and respect for our communities. By literally counting how many we are and where we are, the census is stilling the story of who we are and how far we've come:

  • We are no longer counted as three-fifths of human beings in the census, as we were in the founding days of this nation
  • We are no longer categorized as "less than" in the census as we were during the Jim Crow era
  • Today, as a Black community, we will not be undercounted and robbed of the future which we are rightfully entitled

If we're not counted, decisions about us are made without us, and we've fought too hard for too long to let that happen. The census is how we tell the world: we're here and we matter.

Black Lives Matter is more than a hashtag. It's a call to not only recognize systemic injustices, but also to work to dismantle them. The 2020 Census is a part of that critical work. Why? Because the census is about money, power, and respect for our communities.
When we're fully counted, we get: Money. Biliions for education, housing, transportation, and yes, even healthcare. Power. Full political representation, from City Hall to the halls of Congress. Respect. We empower ourselves to obtain what is rightfully ours and what is owed to us.

By literally counting how many we are and where we are, the census is telling the story of who we are - and how far we've come. We are no longer counted as Three-Fifths of human beings in the census, as we were in the founding days of this nation. We are no longer categorized as 'less than' in the census as we were during the Jim Crow era. Today, as a Black community, we will not be undercounted and robbed of the future to which we are entitled.
The census is easy, safe, and for everyone. Easy. 10 simple questions answered in 5 minutes online or over the phone. No questions about immigration or citizenship. Safe. By law, all census responses are 100% confidential. They can't be shared with anyone -- not ICE, not the police, not even a landlord. For everyone. Everyone counts -- no matter your immigration status, your age, criminal history, housing status, or employment situation.
If we're not counted, decisions about us are made without us, and we've fought too hard for too long to let that happen. The census is how we tell the world: we're here and we matter. So, take 5 minutes and make sure to get yourself and your community counted now: my2020census.gov.
