Load Management Program

Program Overview

In 2016, DCAS launched the Load Management (LM) Program to work with City buildings to find no or low-cost operational energy saving solutions to help meet its 80x50 goals. LM provides real-time data visualization tools, data analysis, and hands-on training for building operators.

The LM Program has helped:

  • reduce emissions
  • lower energy use
  • ensure investments actualize improvements
  • reduce energy costs at low to no upfront cost

With near real-time meter (RTM) data now installed on more than half of the municipal load, the LM team is working with agencies and actively analyzing and prioritizing new locations for program participation.

Outcomes

In Fiscal Year 2019, the Load Management team achieved 67,321 MMBTUs in net energy savings. This means a 10% energy savings for all participating City buildings, and about 3,700 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent avoided; not to mention, one million taxpayer dollars saved. This energy saving is equivalent to taking about 800 cars off the road, or eliminating 11 round-trip flights from NYC's JFK Airport to London Heathrow Airport.

Impact of COVID-19

The City's Load Management Program has developed resources to support building operators during COVID-19. DCAS can help agencies:

  • Identify and work toward correcting system inefficiencies
  • Navigate HVAC best practices during COVID-19
  • Identify relevant trainings
  • Utilize real-time energy monitoring platform EnerTrac, and other tools
