Manhattan Community District 9 (M9) will soon become the first NYC neighborhood to containerize 100% of its trash. Larger residential properties – all with 31 or more residential units, and some with 10-30 residential units – will place their trash out for collection in Empire Bins, NYC's new European-style on-street containers, rather than in bags directly on the curb.
ALL residential properties in Manhattan's Community District 9 will be required to put their trash in containers by June 1, 2025.
The container your property uses will be determined based on the number of residential units.

Empire Bin Opt-In for Properties with 10-30 Units
Individual trash bins must be 55 gallons or less, with secure lids. You can use your own, or purchase Official NYC Bins.
Properties with 10-30 residential units that choose individual trash bins will be subject to the same rules as properties with 1-9 residential units.
NOTE: If you do not submit the Empire Bin Opt-In form by January 31, 2025, your property will automatically be designated for individual trash bin collection.
Smaller properties with up to 9 residential units are now REQUIRED to set out their trash in bins, 55 gallons or less, with secure lids.
Official NYC Bins are available for purchase at bins.nyc (home delivery) or at Home Depot stores in NYC (pick up only – check website for availability).
If you are already using bins with secure lids that are 55 gallons or less to set out trash, you can continue to use them until June 2026. After that, you will need to switch to the Official NYC Bin.
This citywide requirement began on November 12, 2024.
1-9 unit properties currently part of the Hamilton Heights Containerization Pilot, can continue using their current containers until June 1, 2025. After June 1, the older pilot containers will be removed, and properties will be required to use individual trash bins.
