Hart Island is New York City’s public cemetery and final resting place for more than one million people. Managed jointly by the NYC Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME), NYC Parks, and NYC Human Resources Administration (HRA), the City is committed to preserving dignity and providing access.
With the new Hart Island Cemetery Management Tracking System (HiCMTS), New Yorkers can locate and visit the graves of their loved ones on Hart Island. If you suspect a relative may be buried there, you can use the system to find and honor them.
If you require additional assistance please contact New York City Parks Department’s Hart Island Office at Hart.Island@parks.nyc.gov or 212-360-3428.
Some decedents who are buried on Hart Island do not have their exact gravesites identified. This is due to a fire on the island in the late 1970s that destroyed some burial records from 1956 to 1960 and several years of records during the 1970s. Visuals for these burials will be available at the cemetery's observation area.
Personally identifying information from records of fetal remains has been redacted to protect the privacy of family members. Any family member seeking information on fetal remains that may have been buried on Hart Island should call the Office.
