Together with several community partners, the NYPD underwent a Department-wide initiative that is aimed at transforming policing in New York City. This joint effort among Commissioner Dermot Shea, Mayor Bill de Blasio, and external advisors aimed to respond to and extend beyond Governor Cuomo's New York State Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative.
The community partners in this initiative were Arva Rice, President and CEO of the New York Urban League; Jennifer Jones Austin, CEO and Executive Director of the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies; and Wes Moore, CEO of Robin Hood. Their insights and guidance were invaluable to this process.
In March 2021, the City Council passed Resolution No. 1584, adopting the City’s final Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative Plan.
The City is working to implement the plan, and progress can be viewed at the following link: NYPD Reform Implementation Working Group and Initiatives Tracker
