Histology

Cell under microscope

Histology is the microscopic examination of cells and tissues.

The OCME Department of Histology prepares over 30,000 slides each year for microscopic examination to assist our medical examiners in determining the cause and manner of death

The most common stain used is hematoxylin and eosin, better known as H & E Stain. The combination of these two stains produces various shades of purple and pink in the tissue. This laboratory also performs a number of special stains and techniques to support the medical examiner's work.
