About Sustainable Buildings NYC

Dear New Yorkers,

The New York City Department of Buildings and the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability are pleased to welcome you to Sustainable Buildings NYC. This website is a resource for New Yorkers whose buildings are required to make retrofits to increase their energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. All buildings 25,000 sq. feet or larger are covered under the law establishing these requirements, Local Law 97 of 2019.

The passage of this law as part of Mayor de Blasio’s Green New Deal is an unprecedented commitment to increase the sustainability of buildings -- the single-largest source of carbon emissions in our city. Accordingly, it is crucial for New Yorkers to know their responsibilities under the law and to take action now to reduce energy use wherever possible.

In this guide, you will find information on the law and its requirements, including what buildings are covered and what owners need to do to comply; the Advisory Board and Working Groups that have been convened pursuant to the law; resources to help track and reduce greenhouse emissions from buildings; and much more.

My colleagues and I at the Buildings Department look forward to working with all New Yorkers to implement this landmark law in the months and years to come. Through this effort, we will help create a more sustainable city for future generations.

Sincerely,

Melanie E. La Rocca
Commissioner, New York City Department of Buildings
