The mission of the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) is to ensure the safe and lawful use of buildings, properties, and construction sites across the five boroughs by enforcing the City’s Building Code, Zoning Resolution, Multiple Dwelling Law, and New York State Labor Law, with a focus on facilitating compliant development, and worker and public safety, all to make our City a safer place to build, work, and live.
While construction is necessary for the City's future, DOB will minimize the disruptions this work can cause by connecting with tenants, homeowners, and other stakeholders throughout the City. Our goal is to strike the right balance between safety and development. To further this mission, we aggressively enforce the City's laws to protect workers and the public. In addition, we ensure DOB supports all New Yorkers, whether or not they work in the industries we regulate.
What's more, we are redoubling our efforts to modernize the agency to improve response times, bring clarity and consistency to DOB operations, and insist on the highest standards of integrity, both in the construction industry and within the Department.
