DOB HOSTS JUNIOR ARCHITECTS & ENGINEERS DAYS AT NYC SCHOOLS

DOB Architects and Engineers Visit Schools to Speak with More Than 1,750 Students About Careers in the Building and S.T.E.M. Trades

New York, NY – Yesterday, the New York City Department of Buildings visited students at The John Tyler Elementary School in Staten Island to kick off the agency’s Junior Architects and Engineers program. These visits, part of DOB’s Construction Safety Week, are designed to foster interest in the building trades and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields among New York City public school students.

DOB architects and engineers will visit a total of eight elementary and high schools throughout the five boroughs this week, conducting interactive presentations with approximately 1,750 students. These presentations include an overview of different types of buildings in New York City, the relationship between buildings and the environment, and the role that architects and engineers play in designing building structures. The presentations also include a hands-on learning segment, where students draw their favorite New York City buildings and have the opportunity to discuss what makes these buildings unique.

“These visits are an investment in the city’s future,” said Department of Buildings Commissioner Rick Chandler, P.E. “Some of these students will one day be responsible for the design, safety, and innovation of our city’s built environment, so it’s important to get them excited about math and science at an early age.”

• P.S. 449, Grant Avenue Elementary School, Bronx

This year’s Junior Architects and Engineers presentations coincide with the agency’s annual Construction Safety Week, which features a series of events held throughout the five boroughs to raise awareness about the critical importance of construction safety in New York City.
