DOB UNVEILS STUDENT ART EXHIBITION AT BROOKLYN BOROUGH OFFICE

Artwork created by local Brooklyn students to be display as part of DOB’s Junior Architects and Engineers Program

New York, NY – Yesterday evening, the Department of Buildings unveiled a month-long exhibition in our Brooklyn Borough Office showcasing artwork created by students from P.S. 307 Daniel Hale Williams Magnet School for STEM Studies, which serves children from pre-kindergarten through 5th grade.

As part of DOB’s Jr. Architects and Engineers program, students at the school were invited to submit drawings of their favorite buildings throughout Brooklyn. At the unveiling, DOB First Deputy Commissioner Thomas Fariello, R.A. and Brooklyn Borough Commissioner Ira Gluckman, R.A. met with each of the students whose artwork was chosen for the exhibition, and presented each with a certificate for their winning selections. The winning pieces, which were selected by Borough Commissioner Gluckman, will be displayed at the borough office during the month of October.

“The city’s schools are filled with future architects and engineers who will build our city for decades to come,” said Borough Commissioner Gluckman. “One day these students will be responsible for adding to and strengthening our built environment, which makes it all the more important that we get them interested in math and science at an early age.”

DOB’s Jr. Architects and Engineers program is designed to foster interest in the building trades and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields among New York City public school students. Earlier this year, DOB architects and engineers visited schools across the five boroughs, talking with K-12 students about buildings in New York City, the relationship between buildings and the environment, the role that architects and engineers play in designing buildings and structures, and careers in the building trades.

Yesterday’s event coincided with the Department’s Homeowners Night, a regularly scheduled, weekly event held at each of our five borough offices, where we open our doors to the public to provide one-on-one expert advice to homeowners, small business owners, and tenants.
