Joseph J. Esposito Brings Decades of Experience to Lead DOB
Enforcement Efforts
New York, NY– Department of Buildings Commissioner Eric Ulrich announced the appointment of Joseph J. Esposito, one of the city’s preeminent public safety experts, as Deputy Commissioner for Enforcement. He joins the Department after decades serving at the highest levels in New York City Government. Esposito recently served as Commissioner of the New York City Emergency Management from 2014 to 2019, where he led the City’s emergency planning and response operations. He worked closely with the Department of Buildings responding to major buildings-related incidents, including the 2015 East Village Building Explosion, the 2016 Chelsea Bombing Terror Attack, and the 2018 Flatiron Steam Pipe Explosion. He also holds the distinction of being the longest-serving Chief of Department in NYPD history, leading the uniformed members of the NYPD during some of the City’s most trying times, including in the aftermath of 9/11 and Hurricane Sandy.
“Enforcement at the Department of Buildings prioritizes protecting the safety and wellbeing of our fellow New Yorkers,” said Commissioner Ulrich. “Joe Esposito brings decades of City government experience to the Department and is the right person to lead our enforcement efforts.”
“It is an honor to continue my service to the people of New York City at the Department of Buildings,” said Deputy Commissioner for Enforcement Joseph J. Esposito. “The safety of everyone who lives, works and visits in our City will continue to be my top priority in this new role, leading the agency’s efforts to rigorously enforce our City’s building and construction regulations.”
