Public Right-of-Way Encroachments are certain portions of buildings, or elements of buildings, that project beyond the property line and intrude into the public right-of-way or public space, such as sidewalks or streets. The New York City regulations, Construction Codes, and Zoning Resolution establish building element intrusions that are permitted as-of-right, require special approvals, or are prohibited.
Stand-alone projects. Frequently these are renovation projects that result in additions to an existing building, for example: adding a canopy, marquee, or ramp.
Integrated with a new building or an alteration project. Approval is through the New Building or Alteration application, and this guide provides additional references and requirements.
