Financial Empowerment

Through innovative financial education programs, the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) provides the tools and resources New Yorkers need to help them achieve their financial goals.

  • NYC Financial Empowerment Centers help New Yorkers manage their finances with free, one-on-one professional financial counseling. Counselors can help create a budget, establish or improve credit, open a bank account, and deal with debt, including student loans. Visit nyc.gov/TalkMoney today to schedule an appointment.
  • NYC Free Tax Prep program provides trusted, multilingual tax preparation for thousands of individuals, families, and the self-employed. For more information about eligibility requirements and how to file, visit nyc.gov/TaxPrep.

Small Business Providers

If you work for yourself, you need to file taxes annually and make estimated tax payments quarterly.  NYC Free Tax Prep offers free resources to help you grow your business, including specialized tax prep, workshops, one-on-one consultations, toolkits, and more. Black Entrepreneurs NYC (BE NYC)

NYC Department of Small Business Services created BE NYC - to help create equity of opportunity by advancing Black entrepreneurship. There are numerous resources available to support Black entrepreneurs including pro-bono consulting and guidance through BE NYC: Consulting and connections to professional BE NYC: Mentors.

Women Entrepreneurs (WE NYC)

WE NYC is an initiative based out of the NYC Department of Small Business Services that is dedicated to helping women start and grow their businesses. WE NYC offers several services including WE Connect gives guidance to women entrepreneurs to connect them to resources, mentoring programs, and events. WE Master offers financial resources including credit counseling and WE Fund for support with accessing capital to grow your business, and WE Legal for free legal services.
