Legal Defense Trusts
A public servant (or someone acting on behalf of a public servant) may set up a legal defense trust to raise funds to pay for certain legal bills and expenses connected with the public servant’s City employment. The Legal Defense Trust Law and Chapter 5 of the Board Rules describe how to set up a legal defense trust; for what purpose a trust may be established; how a trust must register with the Board; what contributions, and from whom, a trust may accept; how trust funds may be utilized; and what donations and expenditures a trust must report to the Board.
Information for Legal Defense Trust filers
A legal defense trust must use the Legal Defense Trust Reporting Portal to submit all information and documents required by the Legal Defense Trust Law and Board Rules Chapter 5.
Pursuant to Administrative Code § 3-1102(e)(3), a donor to a legal defense trust must complete and sign a Legal Defense Trust Donation Statement.
