Emergency Departments

All emergency departments are required by federal law to provide emergency care in the form of required medical screening examinations and to provide necessary stabilizing treatment to all patients in need of immediate care in an emergency. Every emergency department must have at least one clinician present on every shift to care for pediatric patients.

All hospitals on this list treat children in their emergency departments.

You should discuss with a health care provider if you should schedule a sick visit or seek an urgent care or an emergency visit for your child. If you are in doubt or concerned about a life-threatening emergency, call 911 or visit the nearest emergency department.

Definitions

Trauma Centers

Level I Trauma Centers are hospitals that have been certified to have the most capacity and experience to treat injuries. They must provide total care for every aspect of injury from prevention to rehabilitation, including 24-hour in-house coverage by general surgeons and prompt availability of care in specialties. They treat at least 1,200 injured patients per year, teach and do research.
Level I Pediatric Trauma Centers additionally have at least two pediatric surgeons and admit 200 or more children younger than 15 per year.
Level II Trauma Centers are hospitals that have the same clinical care requirements as a Level I Trauma Center, such as initiating care for all injured patients and providing 24-hour immediate coverage by general surgeons, but they do not have the teaching or research requirements.
Level II Pediatric Trauma Centers additionally have at least one pediatric surgeon and admit 100 or more children younger than 15 per year.

Some hospitals are called mixed trauma centers, which means they have both adult and pediatric trauma centers, and they may provide different levels of trauma care.

Perinatal Centers

Level 1 Perinatal Centers provide care to normal and low—risk newborns and pregnant women. They do not operate neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).
Level 2 Perinatal Centers provide care to newborns and pregnant women at moderate risk, and operate NICUs.
Level 3 Perinatal Centers provide care for patients requiring increasingly complex care and operate NICUs.
Regional Perinatal Centers provide the highest level of care and operate NICUs.
