Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh, FDNY Officials, and partners from federal and national organizations will launch a national campaign aimed at educating people about the dangers of lithium-ion batteries on Wednesday, November 15 at 10:00 a.m. at the FDNY Training Academy at Randall’s Island. The FDNY is collaborating with the US Fire Administration, Consumer Product Safety Commission, Fire Service Research Institute, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Underwriters Laboratories on this campaign to further educate people with safety tips, best practices, and a new PSA.

At the event, members of the FDNY will present video footage and items recovered at lithium-ion battery fires, as well as conduct a live burn of an e-bike. Members of the media will have access to the live burn via livestream.

This year, fires caused by lithium-ion batteries have killed 17 New Yorkers, including three at a fire in Brooklyn on Sunday morning. Additionally, there have been 239 fires and 124 injuries caused by these batteries.
