In 2023, Mayor Adams announced the Plant-Powered Carbon Challenge, NYC’s first food and climate initiative for the private sector to drawn down carbon emissions from food through delicious, climate-friendly plant-powered food. Challenge signatories commit to reducing their food-based emissions by 25% through 2030. The Mayor’s Office of Food Policy works with cross-sector signatories with foodservice environments—from universities and hospitals to corporate cafeterias and sports venues—to implement gentle nudges and subtle shifts that guide diners towards plant-powered options.
