In the summer of 2021, the Department of Probation engaged more than 1,000 young adults in paid opportunities including NeON Works, NeON Photography, and NeON Arts with Beautify NYC. In NeON Works, young people collaborated with The Animation Project and additional teaching artists to build skills in digital media creation, music production, culinary arts, and more. They also took part in job readiness training using the “On My Way” curriculum which features stories written by teens about their own experiences entering the world of work, prompting readers to make connections to their lives and the necessary social-emotional skills that are essential to success on the job. NeON Photography engaged young people in two six-week Introduction to Photography classes.
Through Beautify NYC, NeON Arts teaching artists engaged young people to create 21 public art projects in the seven neighborhoods across New York City with an existing Neighborhood Opportunity Network (NeON) Center. The project—supported by the City Cleanup Corps and the City Artist Corps initiatives—leveraged the power of art and culture to promote recovery in some of the most affected areas impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
