Now through 2022, every NYCHA building will receive pest inspections and any necessary treatments and minor repairs, as well as a thorough cleaning of the building, as part of the Authority’s new Clean Building Initiative.
As part of the Clean Building Initiative, NYCHA will:
- Inspect every apartment to conduct an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) treatment for pests and make any necessary repairs. After receiving general information about the initiative, residents will be notified of the date of their appointment in advance. We may exercise our right to enter to conduct these important inspections and treatments, in accordance with the terms of the resident lease.
- An IPM approach identifies how pests are getting in and why, and fixes these root causes; pesticides are used as a last resort.
- Clean trash chutes and trash chute doors on every floor.
- Install larger trash chute doors in lobbies, when possible.
- Strip and seal hallway floors.
Residents should prepare for their appointments by doing the following:
- Pull furniture away from walls in areas with rodents or bugs.
- Empty all cabinets, including those beneath kitchen and bathroom sinks.
- Cover all open pots and pans and seal all food containers.
- Remove all items from bathroom medicine cabinets.
- Empty closets where insects, rats, or mice have been seen.
- Inform the exterminator if they have any allergies or asthma prior to any treatment.
