Street Co-Namings
Consideration of a Co-Naming Request Guidelines
The final forum for consideration of a request for co-naming will be at a regularly scheduled public meeting of the full board. The Board will make reasonable efforts to publicize the agenda for the meeting where the request for co-naming will be considered.
It is the responsibility of the advocate to demonstrate that the individual or organization for which they are requesting approval for the co-naming, meets the guidelines contained therein.
Specific Guidelines for Co-Naming
A public space may be co-named for ordinary individuals, uniformed personnel, elected officials, person of world, national or local prominence, whose accomplishments in the voluntary works, business, philanthropic, arts, legal, cultural, labor, community, scientific, educational. Military, public and private sectors are of an extraordinary and significant nature.
- Supporting documentation must be presented to the Board for consideration and may include newspaper articles, written statements from credible individuals, organizational records, birth and death records and/or any other tangible information that supports the request.
- The proposed honoree must be deceased.
- Only one street (or public space) may ne named for any individual
- The proposed honoree must have lived in the community at the time of his/her death; or
- Must have grown up in the district and has close relatives still residing in the district at the time of death; or
- In the case of an elected or appointed government official, represented the Community District 9 at the time they held office, whose tenure was distinguished by extraordinary accomplishments would be viewed as a source of pride as a son/daughter of the community;
- In the case of a uniformed individual, has had significant connection to the community such as being stationed at a precinct or firehouse and whose death was in the line of duty;
- In the case of a member of the military must have died while serving the United States during wartime or as a member of an international peace keeping force, and whose actions were performed with unusual gallantry and extraordinary loyalty.
- In the case of a world renowned or legendary individual, must have made a significant and extraordinary contribution directly to the City of State of New York or to the United States, and which had a significant positive impact on the course of historic events in Said City, State or country.
- In the case of an ordinary individual must have owned a business, worked in the district, or played a leadership role in a local civic organization.
- As used in this section, "consistent " means a combined commitment in all such leadership role of at last 10 consecutive calendar years and "extraordinary" means a demonstration of that leadership having a significant demonstrable and beneficial impact, not just on the civic group in which the individual held his or her position of leadership but on the community-at-large.
- Notwithstanding any language herein to the contrary, of the Board views an individual's community commitment to be so extraordinary that I should be acknowledged even though it did not meet the 10-year criteria, it may do so.
- As used herein, "leadership role" is not limited to a tile such as President, Chair, Manager or the like, though those titles may be considered. Leadership may be demonstrated by one's acknowledged standing within the community or organization, and by the respect and deference earned by the individual in the community-at-large.
- Commitment may also be stablished by significant philanthropy to recognized charitable, civic, educational, religious or resident groups, provided such groups had significant presence and effect within the community at the time of the individual's commitment.
Please note: The same guidelines will be used for individuals and organizations for co-naming public streets, buildings, parks, or other public geographical areas with the CB9 district.
