The hiring process to become a Sanitation Worker is managed by two NYC agencies — the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) and the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY).
The hiring process begins when DCAS posts the Sanitation Worker Notice of Examination. Applicants apply to take the exam and pay a nonrefundable application fee.
After the testing period has ended, you will be issued a score and list number by DCAS, and they will publish the civil service list.
NOTE: If you applied for additional Veteran or Disabled Veteran Credit, it will be applied to your final score and verification will be requested.
Once you have passed the physical examination administered by DCAS, you will be placed on a certified list. Candidates will not be called for the physical test until DSNY is authorized to hire new Sanitation Workers. The period of time between the written exam and getting called for the physical exam can vary greatly.
Once we are authorized to hire new Sanitation Workers, our Human Resources division will begin calling in candidates for orientation and processing. Candidates are called in list-number order off the certified list.
We confirm that candidates meet all qualification requirements and are eligible for hire.
At this time, you must present original or certified copies of certain documents to prove you meet the qualifications.
These include:
NOTE: Any willful misstatement or failure to present any required documents will be cause for disqualification.
Candidates must undergo medical testing by DSNY's Health Care Facility to ensure that you meet the medical qualifications to perform the basic duties of a Sanitation Worker.
Once all qualifications are met and paperwork is processed, we will provide you with date to start training.
