Amblyopia is a vision problem in young children. It can lead to permanent vision loss if it is not treated by the time the child is 8 or 9 years old. Three out of every 100 adults have permanently reduced vision because they had amblyopia as a child and did not receive treatment.
Most children with amblyopia do not show symptoms. Some children may have a crossed eye, droopy eyelid or cataract.
All children should have annual vision screenings. No child is too young for a full eye examination if they are having any vision problems.
Most insurance plans cover the cost of a complete vision examination and a pair of glasses.
Depending on the severity of the disease, a doctor may prescribe glasses or an eye patch, eye drops or ointment.
If the child has a cataract or other problem with the eye, they may need surgery.
